Wick Size for a 4" Candle Container

At 4 inches, most chandlers are in multi-wick territory. A single wick can technically reach the top of each family's size range at this width, but it usually means running a wick large enough to bring real tunneling and overheating risk if your fragrance load or wax type pushes the effective diameter any higher - and 4 inch containers are exactly where those two factors start to compound.

The tables below still show single-wick recommendations across every family and wax type (useful as a baseline, and some 4 inch containers genuinely do work with one wick if the wax is soy and the fragrance load is light), but plan to test a two- or three-wick layout in parallel, spaced roughly 1.5 inches apart in a row or triangular pattern. Multiple wicks put more sustained heat into the container, so confirm your vessel is heat-rated before committing a production batch to a multi-wick pour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a 4 inch candle need multiple wicks?

Usually, yes, especially for anything but soy wax at a light fragrance load. The single-wick sizes in the table above are the top of each family's range - if your burn test shows tunneling or an oversized flame, switch to two wicks spaced about 1.5 inches apart rather than sizing the single wick up further.

What is the risk of using one wick in a 4 inch container?

Tunneling is the main risk - a single wick that cannot generate enough heat to melt wax all the way to a 4 inch edge will burn straight down the middle, wasting wax on the sides and shortening the usable burn life of the candle. Sooting and excess mushrooming are the other common failure modes if you oversize the single wick to compensate.

What wick size should I start with for a 4 inch container?

See the master table above for the exact per-wax, per-family size our engine recommends at 4 inches - then treat it as the size for ONE wick in a two- or three-wick layout rather than assuming a single wick at that size is sufficient for the full container.
