Measuring wax and fragrance together starts with a scale, not a measuring cup: weigh your melted wax first, then multiply that weight by your fragrance load percentage and divide by 100 to get the fragrance oil weight. At soy's recommended 8% load, 16 oz of wax takes 1.28 oz of fragrance oil, and 100 g of wax takes 8.0 g. Add the oil once the wax has cooled to the temperature your wax type calls for - 175-185°F for soy, 185-195°F for paraffin - stir for a full two minutes so it binds instead of evaporating, then let the wax cool further to its actual pour temperature before filling containers.

What Goes Wrong Outside the Range

Below the minimum

Weak cold and hot throw. The candle looks and burns fine but barely carries scent across a room, which is the most common complaint traced back to fragrance load.

Above the maximum

Oil that cannot bind into the wax pools on the surface or seeps out, causing sooting, poor burn and a safety risk since the excess is flammable liquid rather than wax.

What happens if I use too much fragrance oil?

Past the wax's maximum load, the oil cannot fully bind into the wax and starts pooling on the surface or seeping out of the finished candle. That free oil is flammable liquid sitting on top of a flame, not wax, so it causes sooting, poor burn and a real safety risk rather than just a stronger scent. Stay inside the range for your wax type and confirm with a burn test before you scale up a batch.

Does fragrance load change my wick size?
