Wick Size for a 3" Candle Container
3 inches is the classic container-candle sweet spot - it is the diameter behind the standard 8oz mason jar, the most common single-pour candle tin, and most 9-10oz tumblers on the market. If you only remember one row from any wick chart, this is usually the one, because so much production candle making happens at exactly this width.
A single wick still does the job at 3 inches in round containers, but this is also where shape starts to matter more. A round 3 inch jar and a square 3 inch container are not the same sizing problem - the square multiplier in our engine adds roughly 10% to the effective diameter, which can be the difference between one size band and the next. If you are pouring into a square or hexagonal container at this width, lean toward the larger end of the recommended range.

Frequently Asked Questions
What wick size should I use for a 3 inch container in soy wax?
See the master table above for the exact soy-wax recommendation across every wick family at 3 inches - it is generated live from the same engine behind our calculator, so it reflects the identical math you would get by entering "3" into the container diameter field.
Is a 3 inch candle single-wick or double-wick?
Single wick, in almost every case - for round containers a correctly sized single wick reaches full melt pool without issue. Double-wicking becomes more common once you move past 3.5 to 4 inches, or for square/rectangular containers at exactly 3 inches where the effective diameter runs larger.
Why do 8oz mason jars sometimes need a different wick than 8oz tins?
Because their diameters are not identical even at the same fluid volume - a mason jar is typically taller and narrower than a wide, shallow tin holding the same 8 ounces. Measure the actual inside diameter of your container rather than relying on its fluid-ounce label.
